Using hard pastels is much faster than colored pencil alone. As I apply the pastel sticks I use a blending stump to spread the color around an area and sometimes I actually use sandpaper to grind some of the pastel sticks into a cup and apply the pastel powder to the paper with a soft paintbrush. The detail of the eyes, the numbers on the ear tag and the fine hairs were created with sharp Polychromos colored pencils and to create the white spots on the cows snout I used a battery operated eraser
