Cara kerja CD (Compact Disc) dalam menyimpan data didasarkan pada prinsip optik. Permukaan CD terbuat dari lapisan plastik polikarbonat yang sangat halus dan dilapisi dengan aluminium atau emas reflektif, serta dilindungi oleh lapisan pernis. Data digital (berupa biner 0 dan 1) disimpan dalam bentuk serangkaian lekukan mikroskopis yang disebut pits (lubang) dan area datar di antaranya yang disebut lands (daratan). Pita dan lands ini diatur dalam jalur spiral yang sangat rapat dari bagian tengah
