We almost always meet King Alfred’s cakes (Daldinia concentrica) at my mushroom hunting workshops! Everyone is always very relieved to find out they’re NOT food 😅 But they are INCREDIBLE survival tools that our ancestors have relied on for fire starting and carrying! Snap one off a tree, dry it by the fire, and use a flint and steel to drop an ember onto it! You’ll see that it burns slowly for hours and hours, which would have given our ancestors plenty of time to move to their next settlement
