Several Australian airlines have canceled flights to and from the popular Indonesian vacation island of Bali after an erupting volcano gushed a column of hot ash miles into the sky.

Three Australian airlines have cancelled flights to and from Bali after a volcanic eruption in nearby Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki created a dangerous 9km ash cloud. Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia flights scheduled for Nov 12 and Nov 13 have been grounded, leaving affected travellers stranded, reported British newspaper The Guardian.

Several flights on different airlines at the Bali airport were canceled due to the ash cloud from the eruption on both Tuesday night and Wednesday.

In 2016, a similar volcanic event on Lombok resulted in prolonged flight cancellations, affecting thousands of passengers for days.

Some flights between Australia and Bali have been cancelled as an Indonesian volcano continues to spew towering columns of hot ash.
