India's Gukesh scored a win over compatriot Leon Mendonca in ninth round of the Tata Steel Masters to go clear at the top.

With 7.5 points, D Gukesh is in pole position, half a point ahead of Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan and a full point more than compatriot R Praggnanadhaa.

Indian chess gears up for a historic participation at the 87th Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, from January 17 to February 2

The cream of India's chess talent is playing at Wijk aan Zee this year. Besides Gukesh, Harikrishna, Arjun Erigaisi, Praggnanandhaa, Leon Mendonca, Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh are in action.

With five wins and five draws, world champion D Gukesh has remained unbeaten in the first major tournament of the year and if he adds another 1.5 points in the last three rounds, it should be enough to lift the title.

The village of Wijk aan Zee has been the host of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament since 1968. The tournament website sayd that the seaside location offers the widest sandbeach of the Netherlands and is located next to the beautiful dune reserve of Noord-Holland.
