A lavish thermal bath complex has been unearthed in Pompeii, the ancient city that was frozen in time following Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 C.E. Archaeologists say it may be one of the largest discoveries of its kind.

Archaeologists in Pompeii have unearthed a “once-in-a-century” discovery which has been buried under piles of rock and ash in the ancient city for over 2,000 years. The news was revealed exclusively to BBC News.

An entire block of Pompeii has now been uncovered, revealing a laundry and bakery, as well as the large private house. It's thought these were all owned by one wealthy individual, possibly Aulus Rustius Verus, an influential Pompeii politician.

Everything was functional to the staging of a ‘show’ at the center of which was the owner himself,” said the archaeological site’s director Gabriel Zuchtriegel in the release.
