It's unclear yet how the Switch successor will approach backward compatibility, but Nintendo is promising details at a later date on this feature.

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 will play games made for the original console. Even though the company still hasn’t officially announced the device, it’s been dropping hints about what the successor to the Switch will have to offer for nearly a year now.

Nintendo confirms that its next console will be backward compatible with current Switch games, answering one of players' most urgent questions before the console's release.

Backwards compatibility between the Nintendo Switch 2 and its predecessor has been confirmed.

"At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch," Nintendo posted in a social media update attributed to company president Shintaro Furukawa. "Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well."

Sega is set to delist a huge swathe of its classic back catalog games from digital storefronts in December, including the Sega Genesis Classics collection and several much-loved games from the Dreamcast era.

Sega fans may want to check out and purchase various Sega games on different platforms before they are eventually delisted.
