The entire West Country was covered by a Met Office yellow weather warning for high winds, as Storm Éowyn battered parts of the region on Friday. Elsewhere, the sentencing of a drink-driver, whose crash caused a woman to lose an arm, also sparked a lot of reaction.

Met Éireann, the Republic of Ireland's national meteorological service, said that the country had faced wind gusts of 114mph in County Galway– the highest recorded wind speeds ever recorded on the island.

A Yellow wind warning is due to come into effect at 11am today for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Louth and Meath, and is valid until 6pm this evening. An additional Yellow wind warning has been issued for Waterford, Cork and Kerry from 11pm tonight until 6am tomorrow.

The clear-up operation is continuing after Storm Éowyn caused chaos across Northern Ireland on Friday. It brought winds of more than 90mph and, at the peak, left 30% of homes and businesses without power. About 140,000 properties are still without electricity.

Emergency crews are cleaning up after a storm bearing record-breaking winds left at least one person dead and more than a million without power across the island of Ireland and Scotland.

Roads are closed, rail services disrupted and more than 60,000 customers remain without power after the storm.

Winds here are currently exceeding 200 mph – their strength is linked to the strong temperature contrast between the cold plunge of air across the eastern US and the far warmer air over the western North Atlantic.

Winds of almost 80mph (128km/h) have battered parts of Yorkshire as Storm Éowyn downed trees and brought travel disruption to the region. An amber weather warning was in place in parts of North, West and South Yorkshire for much of the day, but was later replaced by a yellow warning across the north of the region.
