Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal picked Delhi minister Atishi to replace him as chief minister of the capital territory on Tuesday, allowing him to focus on winning a fresh mandate in elections due next year after getting bail in a graft case.

Kejriwal handed his resignation to Delhi's Lt. Gov. V.K. Saxena after serving the post for more than nine years. He said he would only return to the post if people voted for him in the upcoming Delhi assembly election.

Prominent opposition leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has resigned from his post, days after getting bail in a corruption case. Kejriwal spent five months in jail in connection with a now-scrapped alcohol sales policy.

The opposition leader spent almost six months locked up in relation to alleged irregularities in New Delhi's liquor policy.

Describing Arvind Kejriwal's resignation as electoral ploy, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Tuesday slammed Aam Aadmi Party( AAP) for changing Delhi Chief Minister after such a long delay as people suffered due to Kejriwal's long stay in jail.

Senior AAP leader Atishi will be Delhi’s new chief minister, the party unanimously agreed on Tuesday after Arvind Kejriwal proposed her name as his successor in a meeting of the party's legislators

AAP held a series of meetings to discuss potential candidates for the chief minister's post as Kejriwal is scheduled to meet the Delhi LG at 4:30 pm today.
