Flames ripped through the building that was once the historic Morrison Hotel in downtown Los Angeles Thursday, with several dozen people inside managing to escape before firefighters put out the blaze.

The fire was categorized as a major emergency incident, with at least 17 fire companies on the scene, the L.A. Fire Department said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department knocked down a fire Thursday in a vacant downtown building that was formerly the home of the Morrison Hotel, which became famous after it was photographed as the cover art for the 1970 album by seminal L.

Although the building is vacant, fire officials say there were some homeless people in the structure they rescued.
