A homeless man has been killed as workers cleared a homeless encampment ahead of a major US holiday. The homeless camp close to the historic Ebenezer Baptist church in Atlanta, Georgia, was being cleared ahead of the city’s Martin Luther King Day celebration.

Activists and community members held a vigil to honor the victim and demand that the city be held accountable to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The victim was allegedly inside a tent when he was crushed by a front loader being used to clear out the encampment.
