The space rock, which measures 150 feet across and is traveling at 38,922 miles per hour, is one of five on NASA's radar.
The cosmos has always fascinated humanity with its vast mysterious expanse holding both beauty and potential danger. Among the threats from outer space asteroids are ... Read more The post Why Astronomers Are Tracking a Dangerous Asteroid Headed Toward Earth appeared first on weather-fox.
NASA's Lucy spacecraft, on its way to Jupiter's Trojan asteroids, has its next target in its sights: the main belt asteroid 52246 Donaldjohanson. Currently 45 million miles (70 million kilometers) from the two-mile-wide (3.
Asteroids are left over remnants from the formation of the solar system, mostly rock, but also metallic, or icy bodies that tend to live in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Space agencies like Nasa and Esa independently monitor and track over ...
NASA's Lucy spacecraft recently obtained its first clear images of the main belt asteroid 52246 Donaldjohanson, which is now within its line of sight. Lucy captured these images while it was 45 million miles (70 million kilometers) away from the asteroid.
“Serpent Mound is the largest serpent effigy built anywhere on the planet Earth,” O’Grady said. “Serpent Mound is built up on top of a bluff, and the reason that bluff is there, it's part of the impact from a meteor 250 million years ago. It's been being eroded ever since then.”
In late January this year, NASA’s Psyche spacecraft turned its cameras to the sky and captured some incredible images. The twin cameras onboard, part of the spacecraft’s imaging system, photographed the planets Mars and Jupiter, along with Jupiter’s moons - Io, Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.
The main belt asteroid Donaldjohanson is now in sight as the Discovery Program mission prepares for a flyby of the object in April.
2024 YR4 follows a highly elliptical, four-year orbit, swinging through the inner planets before shooting past Mars and out toward Jupiter. The most infamous asteroid impact occurred 66 million ...
NASA is tracking a house-sized asteroid set to whiz past Earth tomorrow at a thundering 29,304 miles per hour. The space rock—named "2025 DJ22"—is estimated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to be approximately 47 feet across, making it about the size of a house.
NASA's Lucy spacecraft has its next flyby target, the small main belt asteroid Donaldjohanson, in its sights. By blinking between images captured by Lucy on Feb. 20 and 22, this animation shows the perceived motion of Donaldjohanson relative to the background stars as the spacecraft rapidly approaches the asteroid.
Scientists around the world are closely watching an asteroid, named 2024 YR4, which could get uncomfortably close to the earth in 2032. We find out more about the space rock and the efforts being made to protect our planet from the risk of collisions.
