HONOLULU (Island News) -- Fans flocked to the final day of the Sony Open on Sunday at Waialae Country Club. Canadian Nick Taylor tapped in a birdie putt from just under three feet on the second hole to capture the victory over Nico Echavarria. It was Taylor's fifth PGA Tour title, the last three coming in playoffs.

HONOLULU — Kensai Hirata of Japan opened with four straight birdies, and he got up-and-down for one last birdie on the 18th at Waialae for a 7-under 63 and a one-shot lead among the early starters Friday in the Sony Open.

Hideki Matsuyama, who won the PGA Tour's opening event of the season on Jan. 5 at The Sentry, was in a tie for 29th entering the final round of the Sony Open on Jan. 12 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii.
