California has also reported bird flu infections in cats fed raw milk or pet food. In one Los Angeles household, five cats got sick — and two died — after eating two kinds of raw pet food. Samples from one of the two brands, Monarch Raw Pet Food, tested positive for the virus, officials said.

The latest poultry outbreak confirmation from the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) includes a detection in Georgia at a broiler farm that houses 45,500 birds in Elbert County, located in the northeastern part of the state.

H5N1 confirmed in more cats as probe into raw pet food widens
Cats in one of the earlier-affected households had been exposed to two raw pet food diets, one of which was found to contain live, infectious H5N1 virus. The Monarch Raw Pet Food brand is sold at farmers' markets in California. Oregon health officials have also tied cat illnesses to a nationally marketed brand called Northwest Natural.
