‘Damage is unimaginable’ in Chimney Rock after images show half of village wiped out
Chimney Rock is along U.S. 64 hugging the Broad River in Rutherford County. Lake Lure is located just east of Chimney Rock also along U.S. 64. Photos from the village of Chimney Rock showed about half of the business on the southern side — nearest to the Broad River — gone from flooding.

And then worse than the worst happened, as a wall of water came rushing down the Broad River, wiping out most of the structures along Main Street — and Main Street itself — in the Village of Chimney Rock, and straining the dam that holds back Lake Lure.

Tracy Stevens had left her house in Chimney Rock Thursday night and gotten a room at the Lake Lure Inn, which had a generator and was staying open through the storm. The two towns, both popular tourist destinations, are walking distance to one another, joined by a bridge across the Broad River in the mountains of Rutherford County.
First responders were able to successfully rescue four people and a dog, and evacuate 106 people, two cats, and two dogs.

The WITN weather center says the Pamlico River peaked at 4.34 feet, putting it in minor flood stage last night.
