GARDA Commissioner Drew Harris has conceded that the force got its tactics wrong when riots erupted at a controversial anti-immigrant protest in Dublin.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has said Thursday night was the first time he saw footage of the far-right riots in Coolock which was broadcast on television.The commissioner said this was despite putting appeals out in July for footage and making approaches to those responsible for the security of those premises.

It was wrong to stand down the Garda public order unit from a site which was later subjected to arson, the Garda Commissioner has conceded. The site of the former Crown Paints Factory in Coolock, Dublin, was subjected to a blockade for more than 100 days after it was earmarked for use to accommodate asylum seekers.

However, he criticised the fact that that footage had only emerged eight weeks after a Garda appeal for such evidence.
