At least 24 people have died after heavy rain pounded Kerr County, Texas, early Friday, leading to "catastrophic" flooding, the sheriff said.

An estimate of 20 girls remained missing after deadly flooding caused “destructive” floods at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said.

The heavy rains overnight Thursday and into Friday hit a region of Texas called Hill Country. The hilly terrain gives the water nowhere to go, overflowing rivers and other bodies of water, said Scott Kleebauer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
